Stuttering/Stamning

Ed Schicatano I worked with a stutterer a couple of years ago. And by the way, you need to ask “are you a person who stutters”, or “are you a stutterer”. The latter implies that it’s part of their identity.

Here’s what I did.
1. Find out ”when” he does it. In front of who?
Can he feel it? Before it happens? If so, you can tap on those sensations as the client practices speaking.

2. When does he NOT do it? He doesn’t do it if talking to his pet dog. He doesn’t do it if talking to his little brother, or anyone who is younger than him.
Bottom line: Does client only stutter when he/she is nervous or talking to an authority? Perhaps there’s a fear of being evaluated???? Tap on this and the emotions and sensations that accompany this.

3. If there is a past trauma that clearly caused the stuttering, then you have to work on eliminating the emotions associated with the trauma. This can be a lot of work. I never did this.

4. Future pacing – Project into the future and imagine situations in which the client knows that he/she will stutter. Tap while they’re thinking about this, and even tap as they speak.

These ideas may help. I wasn’t 100% successful. His stuttering was reduced significantly though. I only met with him twice.
